Apia Holidays
Apia is the capital city of Samoa and can be found nestled on the central-northern coast of the main island Upolu. The city has a population of around 37,000 people, making it the largest city in Samoa and has all the amenities and conveniences you could want. You can enjoy waterfront views across the Apia Harbour when you stay at the historical Sheraton Samoa Aggie Greys Hotel & Bungalows. This hotel sits in a great location that is close to the beach and also to the centre of Apia and the shops, restaurants and bars to be found there. The city is a 45 to 50-minute drive from the international airport located further west at Faleolo.
Apia has some great attractions for travellers and one of the best places to start for those new to the country is the Samoa Cultural Village, which has been created as a working village to give visitors an insight into the traditional way of life and is a must do during your stay in Apia. Friendly and knowledgeable staff will deliver presentations about the various aspects of Samoan life and you will walk away with an appreciation for the importance of culture and history to the Samoan people.
It’s an interesting and worthwhile trip to the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, dedicated to showcasing the life and work of this world-famous writer who lived in Samoa for the last years of his life. The museum is a recreation of his home and has lots of interesting information about his life on Samoa, his prolific writing career and his personal history. The guides are well versed and very helpful and if you’re up for the exercise you can hike up the mountain to visit his grave and enjoy the spectacular views.
When you are looking for something more adventurous, try visiting Palolo Deep which is a snorkel and dive site just 50-metres offshore at Apia. The deep ocean hole is home to colonies of coral and a multitude of fish species and other marine life. This is part of the Palolo Deep Marine Reserve which is a protected marine environment created to allow the area to regenerate and thrive. The site is ideal for beginners and if you prefer there are guided snorkeling and diving tours running to this site daily. On the bank there are fales for shade, a small beach area and some grassy areas to use as well.
Apia is a friendly city and you will enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the helpful locals who will make you feel welcome on your visit to this amazing place.
